Question:
I am looking to get into beer making. Problem is that I do not drink much beer and space is a concern. All the recipies are for 5 gallons of beer. Is it ok to reduce these recipies and just make one gallon at a time? One gallon at a time is all I need and would have room for.
Anyone else make their beer a gallon at a time? Know of any recipies made for just the one gallon brew?

I would divide 5 gallon batch ingredients by 5 and only use malt extract
(or partial mash) recipes. Also, weighing that small amount of hops is very difficult. I made probably 30 one gallon batches by now, usually very exotic beers. I think you can make good beer this way. If it's a staple beer though, like a pale ale, consider that you will be doing at least 1/2 the work involved in a 5 gallon batch for 1/5 of the beer. If that doesn't bother you, good luck. Grad school has me so busy that I don't consider brewing anything less than 10 gallons for the amount of time it takes. What I do now is brew a good staple beer (wheat beer, stout, whatever) and then flavor a few single gallons so that I don't get sick of it. Trading with friends is another idea.
