| Wine And Beer Making |
Question: I'm considering winemaking, since SWMBO is not very interested in beer (more
for me!). Of course, I wouldn't even consider to stop brewing.
I've been brewing for 14 years, have done extract, partial mash, and all grain.
If I were to rate extract brewing at a '4' level of difficulty, and all grain
at an 8 or so, where would winemaking fall on this scale?
How much time does winemaking take?
Is there any additional equipment (over and above my brewing equipment) that I
would need?
Can someone recommend a good winemaking book?
Are there many brewers out there who also make wine?
Answer: I make a small amount of wine in addition to the cider, soda, and beer. From
what I've heard a significant number of brewers are beginning to branch out
into other beverages. Hmmm... extract=4, grain=8... It all depends. If you
make wines from kits then I would rate it a 4 just like extract. If you want
to go the all grape route then you're at the 8 or 9 level in my opinion.
Wine is something you can make as simple or complex as you like. Kits are
simple but I wouldn't discount them. There are many really good tasting ones
out there. They also don't require an investment in equipment as you should
already have everything you need from your brewing. Well, you might need
some smaller carboys as the kits never fill up the standard size ones
without topping off.
Wine does require a larger block of your time than beer. With the average kit
you are looking at over a month till the wine gets bottled. A couple of
weeks to get over being bottled plus some ageing time on top of that.
As far as books go I would first take a look at Making Table Wine at Home,
http://wineserver.ucdavis.edu/WineGrape/Homewine/ it's a free download from
UC Davis. You could also take a look at The Complete Handbook of
Winemaking - from the American Wine Society. Of course I would start with
the free one first.
More questions:i found alot of
beer making sites tho... I ended up using 1 tablespoon of unsulphured
molasses. How does one make wine compared to beer? What is the time involved for
aging....a check of the yellow pages indicated only five
stores specializing in winemaking suppliesI'm considering winemaking, since SWMBO is not very interested in beer (more
for me!). Of course, I wouldn't even consider to stop brewing.
